These studies investigated the use of CE for the determination of PSP toxin levels in both dinoflagellate and shellfish extracts but poor sensitivity would limit the usefulness of the described procedures.

The METHODS OF ANALYSIS 35 toxins bear charges ranging from —1 to + 2 at pH 7 and these charge differences were exploited in the studies that led to the purification and identification of the full complement of PSP toxins (Schantz et al 1958; Hall 1982). These studies used ion exchange chromatography to separate the toxins from each other and from the sample matrix components. While most of the studies were not designed to develop new analytical techniques, they laid the groundwork for the analysis techniques utilizing HPLC that came later.
