When their doctor pronounced the boy “in no immediate danger,” the ball went on, the Lincolns disappearing several times to check on Willie. The next day, Willie’s breathing became labored. Lincoln cancelled a cabinet meeting. Then Tad became sick, too. ” Mary was distraught, remembering Edward’s death a dozen years earlier. She sat up all night at Willie’s bedside, but the boy never opened his eyes again, dying on February 20. Lincoln sobbed; Tad collapsed; Robert, who had been called home from Harvard, was inconsolable.

Lincoln’s grief was overwhelming; by some accounts, he suffered a six-month bout of depression. Two years later, he proposed marriage to Mary Owens, a young woman he had courted before he met Ann. Mary had gone back to her father’s farm in Kentucky, where she gained considerable weight and lost several teeth. Nevertheless, Mary thought herself a refined young woman and, in this second courtship, often criticized Lincoln for his backwoods manners. Although the circumstances are unclear, Abe wrote and offered to sever their relationship.

There are still some historians who debate how strongly Lincoln felt about human bondage before he personally encountered it. Like his neighbors, he grew up believing that African-Americans were inferior to whites, unfit to vote or to serve on juries, and should not marry outside their race. As a young frontiersman, he had made blacks the object of his jokes, calling grown men “boys” and telling ribald stories about “darkies,” “niggers,” “pickaninnies,” and the like. From an early age, however, he was convinced that slavery was evil; that humans were created equal, but that growing up in slavery could make them inferior; and that owning slaves dehumanized even good people.
